Carl G. Strickland, 88, of 613 North St. in Smithfield died Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Veterans Medical Center in Durham.

Born in Johnston County, Mr. Strickland was a veteran of World War II and a former prisoner of war. He was the last surviving charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5886 in Smithfield. Mr. Strickland was the son of the late Crawford and Eva Wallace Strickland. He was the widower of Ruth Barbour Strickland. They were married for 55 years.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in Knollwood Memorial Park.

Surviving are his sons, Rudy Strickland of Grifton and Dennis Strickland of Cove City; a sister, Pauline Stallings of Selma; and three grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 till 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at Underwood Funeral Home, 522 S. Bright Leaf Blvd., Smithfield.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the charity of one’s choice or to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5886 in Smithfield.
