James Garland Smith, 96, of 7296 N.C. 50 South in the Meadow community died Monday, Aug. 25, at his home.
Born Feb. 3, 1912, in Johnston County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Lonnie and Hettie Lee Smith. He was the widower of Alice Peacock Smith. Mr. Smith was a retired farmer and a charter member of the Meadow Volunteer Fire Department, which he served for 29 years. Also, he served on the local board of First Citizens Bank and was a committee member for the Johnston County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. Mr. Smith attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Rose & Graham Funeral Home, 301 W. Main St., Benson. The Rev. Robert Capps will officiate. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.
Surviving are her son, J. David Smith of Florence, S.C.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 till 8 p.m. today (Tuesday, Aug. 26) at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Meadow Volunteer Fire Department, 7409 N.C. 50 South, Benson, N.C. 27504; or to the Trinity Baptist Church Building Fund, in care of Jean Lee, 8515 Meadowbrook Road, Benson, N.C. 27504.
