James Bernice “Jake” Woodard, 78, of Princeton died Wednesday, Oct. 1, after a long illness.
Born Oct. 27, 1929, in Johnston County, Mr. Woodard was a son of the late Alton and Betty Lee Fields Woodard. He was the owner and operator of Woodard Furniture and Appliances in Princeton for 42 years. Mr. Woodard was a past member of the Princeton Jaycees, the Princeton Lions Club, the Princeton Fire Department and the Princeton Cemetery Board. Also, he had served as water commissioner on the Town Board. Mr. Woodard was a member of Parrish Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Parrish Funeral Home, 305 Barden St., Princeton. Burial with military honors will follow in Princeton Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Edith Jones Woodard; three daughters, Diane Moye of Pine Level, Sue Vann of Carolina Beach and Joy Moore of Princeton; a son, Larry Woodard of Princeton; a sister, Merle Woodard Gurley of Smithfield; two brothers, Robert Woodard of Richlands and Jerry Lee Woodard of Smithfield; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Princeton Fire Department or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 220, Raleigh, N.C. 27605-1351.
