Johnston County is home to a pair of Wachovia Conference Cup winners. Clayton earned top honors in the Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference, while North Johnston walked away with the Carolina 1-A Conference's Cup.

The Wachovia Cup award, sponsored by Wachovia and the N.C. High School Athletic Association, recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state's four competitive classifications.

Clayton's spring season, which didn't include a conference championship for the Comets, was good enough across the board to hold off Holly Springs for top league honors. Clayton had 235 points to Holly Springs' 224.

Holly Springs picked up spring league titles in boys golf, boys tennis and girls soccer.

West Johnston was a solid third at 219.5 points, while Southeast Raleigh (216) took fourth and Garner (209) was fifth. The Trojans edged past Knightdale (208.5) in the final rundown, thanks to their conference title in softball. Smithfield-Selma stood seventh in the league at the end of the season with 197 points. East Wake rounded out the team rundown.

North Johnston brought home three conference crowns in the spring - boys golf, boys tennis and softball - to outdistance runner-up Rosewood by 19 points (67.5 to 48.5). Ayden-Grifton was a half-point behind Rosewood for third, while Princeton came in fourth, just another half-point behind Ayden-Grifton. Spring Creek was fifth (44.5), followed by North Duplin (15).

A future Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference member led the way in the Cape Fear Valley 3-A Conference. Harnett Central, which joins the GNRC this fall, led the league with 225.5 points, ahead of Triton (217.5).

South Johnston, which won the boys track and field league title, finished fifth in the conference with 195 points. Union Pines (209.5) and Western Harnett (202.5) were third and fourth, respectively.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.
