West Johnston High School graduate Maraya Slatter ran the second fastest 800 meters by a high school athlete ever in North Carolina earlier this month at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro.

Slatter finished eighth in the event in 2:10.39.

Two West Johnston 4x800 relay teams also competed in the event. The Wildcat boys' 4x800 team finished eighth in their heat of the Emerging Elite 4x800 at 8:09.65. Eric Baldwin, Chris Garrett, Chad Massengill and Dakota Peachee made up West's relay group.

West's girls were 14th in the 4x800. Ashley Matthews, Kelly Montague, Lauren Pollard and Maraya Slatter finished at 9:18.13.
