Carolina 1-A Conference champion Princeton rolled into the second round of the NCHSAA 1-A volleyball playoffs with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-23 victory over Chocowinity Southside on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (17-5) were set to host Lakewood (19-3) in a second-round match on Tuesday. The third round is set for Thursday evening.
Four others bow out in opening roundThe opening round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A volleyball playoffs didn't go as well for the other county schools. South Johnston, West Johnston and North Johnston all lost their first-round matches on Saturday.
South Johnston, which won 19 matches this season, was eliminated by Wilson Hunt in three games. West Johnston (5-14 this season) bowed out in three games to Greenville Rose. North Johnston (18-8) took a four-game loss against South Granville.
SSS falls in dual tennis playoffsGreater Neuse River 4-A Conference co-champions Clayton and Smithfield-Selma were both eliminated in the first round of last week's NCSHAA 4-A Dual Team Tennis Playoffs. The Comets finished the dual season 15-3 after a 9-0 loss to Wilmington Hoggard.
Smithfield-Selma fell to Southern Pines Pinecrest by the same score. The Spartans were 15-5 in dual team play.
Clayton nabbed a share of the league title on Oct. 13, avenging an earlier loss to SSS with a 6-3 victory. After the two teams split singles play, 3-3, the Comets swept all three singles wins. Katie Durham and Hayley Gastiger defeated the Spartans' Olivia Juarez and Mallory Barnes 8-4, while Kristen Edwards and Paige Morrison topped Caroline Tobin and Olivia Stevens at No. 2, 8-4.
At No. 3 doubles, Joy Guha and Sheena Murray were 8-4 winners over Elledia Ijames and Hillary Braswell.
Smithfield-Selma's Juarez picked up the GNRC individual championship, while Clayton's Durham and Gastiger won the league's doubles crown.
West tops Smithfield-SelmaWest Johnston downed Smithfield-Selma 6-2 on Wednesday in boys soccer. Six different Wildcats scored in the victory: Tyler Hill, Steven Keifer, Avery Andrews, Kelly Shelton, Austin Tucker and Tom Molineaux. Trey Andrews assisted on two West goals, while Avery Andrews, Audric Berger, Molineaux and Justin Wadia had single assists.
The Wildcats (5-8 conference) fell to league champion Clayton 3-2 on Oct. 19. SSS (2-10-1 conference) tied Harnett Central 3-3 on the same night, then took a 4-3 win over Garner a night later.
West's junior varsity team has clinched the junior varsity Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference title.
The Wildcats were 10-0-3 in league games.
