BENSON - Garner's getting used to being a victim of Matthew Dupree's right arm. Wednesday night, the West Johnston sophomore provided his usual stellar pitching outing against the Trojans and added two key two-out RBIs as well in a 3-0 Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference baseball victory.

The win (which came in a game that was postponed from Tuesday night) moved the Wildcats to 15-4 overall and 9-1 in the league, keeping West's advantage over the conference field at two games.

All three of West Johnston's run-producing hits came with two outs. In the bottom of the first, Dupree fell behind in the count 0-2 but stayed alive and doubled on a 1-2 pitch to center field, scoring Doug Furlong. Todd Spivey followed with a two-out walk before Robbie Logan worked his way to a 3-2 count.

Logan then ripped a liner just inside of the third base bag, bringing in courtesy runner Deonte Anderson with West's second run.

The game's only other run came when Dupree tripled to right field with Kris Richards on second base in the bottom of the fifth inning.

"It's a credit to the kids, they executed in those situations," West Johnston coach Mike Jacobs said. "They got good pitches to hit and took advantage of it. As the game went along though, we didn't continue to do the same thing. Fortunately, Dupree threw another great game for us and we didn't need much offense."

Dupree held Garner to four hits, two of which came in the top of the seventh inning and brought the potential game-winning run to the plate with nobody out. But the righty worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground ball out before ending the game with his 11th strikeout of the night.

He improved to 3-0 against the Trojans in his short career with a 0.78 ERA and two shutouts. West had just four hits on the night as well.

The Wildcat defense ended the two early Trojan at bats with double plays. Garner put two runners on with one out in the top of the second. But then Jordan Wallace pulled in a soft liner in right field and threw back to

Richards near second base. Richards then made a successful swipe tag on the Garner base runner before he could get back to second base, ending the inning.

"You always coach your guys to hit the cutoff man and a play like that is why," Jacobs said. "Jordan Wallace made a solid play, hit his cut off man and Kris Richards was in the right position to play and made the kind of play you expect great players like him to make.

"Both of the double plays were big, they took Garner out of potentially big innings."

Logan turned an unassisted double play in the third, catching a liner at first with the Trojan base runner breaking for second base on an apparent hit and run, then stepping on the bag for the third out of the inning.

The softball match up between West and Garner was also rained out on Tuesday. It will be made up Monday at West.
