JOHNSTON COUNTY - The opening round of the NCHSAA playoffs brought wins from four of the six Johnston County teams on the diamond Friday night.
West Johnston claimed its first ever state baseball playoffs victory with a 4-2 decision over Green Hope and South Johnston pulled one of the more notable victories of the night in the 3-A playoffs, drilling Rockingham County, 14-2.
Both Johnston 1-A squads will play on Tuesday as well. North Johnston downed Pamlico 7-3 for its second straight trip to the second round, while defending state champion Princeton eliminated Northampton-East in a 15-0, five-inning affair.
Smithfield-Selma and Clayton both took tough one-run losses in the 4-A playoffs. SSS fell 2-1 at Wilmington Ashley, while Clayton rallied within a run in the bottom of the seventh before falling 5-4 to Leesville Road.
We'll have reports on all of the games in next week's print edition of The Herald.
