SMITHFIELD - Jeff Citero's two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th lifted American Legion Post 71 to a come-from-behind victory over Cary Post 67 Wednesday night in the opening game of their Area I, Western Division semifinal series.
The Sabres battled from behind on three separate occasions, including overcoming a 4-0, ninth inning deficit.
Brian Mills initiated the ninth inning rally with a solo homer, which was followed by consecutive singles by Blake Murray and Kyle Cummings.
Colin Parker delivered a two-run double to trim the margin to 4-3. Parker was then caught off base, but the throw to third was errant, allowing Parker to score the tying run.
Cary scratched out a run in the top half of the 10th, but Post 71 responded with a single by Drew Alford, sacrifice by Ryan Daughtry and an RBI-single by Murray.
Mills answered a 12th inning homer by Cary with his second blast of the night in the bottom half of the inning.
Game 2 in the best-of-five series will be at Green Hope High School in Morrisville tonight. The series returns to Smithfield Friday night for Game 3.
